Background of the Study
Modern Nigerian literature has witnessed a surge in innovative syntactic structures that reflect the dynamic socio-cultural landscape. Contemporary novelists often blend traditional storytelling techniques with modern narrative styles, resulting in diverse syntactic constructions. This study examines the syntactic patterns in modern Nigerian novels, focusing on sentence structure, clause integration, and the use of non-standard grammatical forms. Such innovations are influenced by factors including code-switching, cultural hybridity, and global literary trends (Chinwe, 2023). By analyzing a representative corpus of contemporary novels, the research seeks to identify recurring syntactic features and assess their impact on narrative coherence and reader engagement. The study also considers how these syntactic innovations contribute to the expression of cultural identity and social critique, offering insights into the evolution of Nigerian literary language (Afolabi, 2024). This investigation will provide valuable data for literary theorists and linguists interested in the intersection of language, literature, and cultural change (Okeke, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Although modern Nigerian novels are celebrated for their innovative narrative styles, there is limited systematic research on their underlying syntactic structures. Existing literary studies often emphasize thematic and stylistic elements, overlooking the grammatical and syntactic innovations that shape narrative discourse (Chinwe, 2023). This gap hampers a comprehensive understanding of how contemporary writers manipulate syntax to reflect socio-cultural realities. Without detailed syntactic analysis, it is difficult to appreciate the full complexity of modern literary language and its impact on reader interpretation. This study aims to address this deficiency by evaluating the syntactic structures in modern Nigerian novels and examining their contribution to narrative expression (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document syntactic structures in modern Nigerian novels.
  2. To analyze the impact of these structures on narrative coherence.
  3. To assess the cultural implications of syntactic innovations.

Research Questions

  1. What are the predominant syntactic patterns in modern Nigerian novels?
  2. How do these patterns affect narrative structure and clarity?
  3. What cultural insights emerge from syntactic innovations?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it bridges literary analysis and linguistics by examining the syntactic structures in Nigerian contemporary literature. The findings will benefit literary critics, linguists, and educators by providing a deeper understanding of how language innovations reflect cultural shifts (Chinwe, 2023; Okeke, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing syntactic structures in modern Nigerian novels.

Definitions of Terms

  • Syntactic Structures: The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences.
  • Contemporary Literature: Modern literary works produced in recent decades.
